Half of a Box Score

There has got to be some way to get complete box scores up on the dakstats site. If an NAIA school plays a non-NAIA school then half of the box scores will be permanently missing. Why would I then ever send anyone to that site? Who wants to click a link and get only one teams stats from the game?

Suggestions:

1. Make it so if a NAIA school synchs a game versus a non-NAIA school that both teams stats are synched.

2. Make it so if two NAIA schools are synching, the home school receives priority.

3. If that does not work, how about a check box on the game screen that says something like synch both teams.

I know there will be a bunch of crying because people say they either don't keep stats for opponents or the home school did them inaccurately. If the home school did them wrong then communicate with the school to make corrections and resynch. Teams should not really be just randomly making changes to the games official stats at a whim anyway without some agreement amongst teams.
If it's because the home school does not stat the visiting team, first I suggest start keeping stats for the visitors, it's time, it's 2007, and well you do it for basketball. I don't even really understand how teams have survived with only half of a box score for volleyball and soccer.

All that to say... Full Box Scores are a Must

You get a big AMEN from this corner on that!!!!

Furthermore, there are procedures in place to correct stats, I recall, so there is no valid reason to randomly correct stats on a whim....

Weve been waiting to see if others would comment on this topic.  I was hoping to see what others said about the home team reporting comments.  If others have something to add, pelase do so.

On to your post......

We do agree. A complete box is important.  I will try my best to explain why we don't do this currently.  Ideally, we can find a solution to the issues and include the information.

To address item 1: This one is fairly simple since you are dealing with a non reporting opponent. We hope to offer this in the near future.

Items 2 & 3.

The issue focuses on rosters.  To upload stats for both teams, the rosters have to be identical in the DakStats software for both teams.  If not, when the information is uploaded to the website, it would potentially create duplicate players.  Furthermore, you risk a worse scenario, where the person reporting the stats may actually attribute (link) the stats to the wrong player when uploaded.  While duplicate players are relatively easy to detect and merge, stats being attributed to the wrong players are not.

Our feeling has always been that each school should be responsible for reporting their own stats.  This includes rosters.  There is no one better to ensure that the information is correct, then the school itself.  Still, we have a significant issue with duplicate players.  Our fear is that the issue will be compounded if we allow teams to interact (add, merge, delete) with the rosters of other teams.

We do not disagree with your point of allowing the home team to report for the competition.  It would solve this particular issue, but could cause others.  The last paragraph of your original post sums up the reservations about the home team reports discussion that weve heard from many teams.  This is an NAIA decision and we will enforce the policies that the NAIA dictates.

The NAIA policy currently says that the home team is responsible for the stats, but makes no mention of who is responsible for reporting them to the NAIA.  As a result, we feel the approach we have now is the best for all involved.  But we do expect this reporting process to evolve.

Technically we can allow a team to report stats for both teams.  Those that have used our Web-Sync tournament feature know that they actually report game stats for both teams.  However, with that process we do not let them touch the rosters.  They must be downloaded prior to the tournament.  Something similar to this could be done, for the regular season, but there are always pros and cons.

This is a long post and I hope it isnt confusing.  Weve mapped out a lot of scenarios to address this issue and there is no easy answer for this item.  The best I can say at this time is that we can handle the situation for non reporting teams, and we will keep working on the issue for others.

I appreciate any comments or thoughts you have.

It seems that if everyone has their rosters synched then the issue of duplicate players could easily be solved by teams downloading the roster from dakstats rather than manually entering them. I guess then there could still be trouble for those who import an xml file from stat crew.

You mentioned that if stats get uploaded to the website they potentially could be linked to another player which is a problem. If a merge in the original file is made and then the game is resynched wouldn't the problem then be fixed? Rather then add, merge, or delete from an opponents roster why not just fix the way the persons name appears in the roster locally then resynch.

I discovered another reason why not having both sides of the boxscore synched is a problem. While this is not necessarily a dakstats concern I thought I'd share it. When nominating Player of the Week for NAIA soccer, the NAIA site imports stats from the dakstats site. For goalie stats it can't import shots on goal by the opponent which is also the number of shots faced by the other teams goalie. This could also be a feature request for the box scores on the goalie stats. Currently for the goalie the only stats are minutes goals allowed and saves. Maybe a shots faced category? I know it is not traditional but at least if we had it then it would be a synched stat and then could be used for player of the week stuff.
