Reporting Issues

During the baseball and softball season people experienced a number of issues.  The most common were timeout issues and 10 - invalid response messages during web-syncing.

The time out issues were more prevalent toward the end of the season.

These issues were caused by several things.  Most of which weve already taken steps to resolve.  Unfortunately it took much of the season to pin down.

We added a new server dedicated to the Web-Sync Reporting.  This updated hardware allowed us to improve site performance and reduced the occurrence of the Invalid response messages.  It also helped with the time out issues.

The Time out message generally occurred because of the amount of information that was reported at the end of baseball and softball seasons.   Transmitting a full seasons worth of stats for these sports was taking too long.  This was unique to baseball and softball.  The reporting process for these sports will be modified to report the information in smaller chunks.  This will eliminate any lingering Timeout error messages.

What other errors or problems have you seen with the reporting process?

One thing that continued to give us fits, in both basketball and baseball/softball was how other schools can screw up your stats for the NAIA.

For example, and Jon you should remember this, we had an instance with Indiana Wesleyan where they continued to add in games against us that never took place and thus it threw off our win/los record.

Everytime we synced we would get error messages and the only way to resolve it was to get Jon and his crew at Dak involved.

It seems to me there has to be a way to safeguard against this.

Another issue is for baseball/softball. There were many times over the past two years where I would travel to a game (Spring Trips for example) and no SID from the other school was there. When I synced our stats we were good, until the team we were playing put in completely different stats!

Isn't there a way that this can be avoided?
That has been a HUGE headache for us here!
We will have everything good until another school screws up OUR stuff!

I thoroughly agree...

Being at Albertson, we are the first school on the list of teams that pops up on the SID-Help page...

Time and time again, we'll have 2-4 games a weekend added to our schedule/stats/scores from schools 2500-miles away, because the clicked the wrong team...

In fact, since it is the way the raters look for their standings for the national poll, this actually hurt our SB team this year, because it listed we lost 4 games one weekend (before I could delete them - not knowing what it did to the team that posted the info?)

Yes,
In my opinion this MUST be sorted out in time for fall!
It is a problem across the nation that ends up killing the credibility of the stats and hurts the teams for national ratings.

Bottom line is that the website it only as good as the information on it.
It can be the coolest looking, most user frinedly site in the world, but if the info is incorrect then what is the point.

And when my AD asks me why we are paying $75 per sport for a web program that has incorrect info and most the time he is listening to me complain about not being able to sync, or error messages, or other bugs, then what am I to tell him?

There are some out here on the Left Coast who say - why pay the $75? (I know that we paid it)...what is the NAIA going to do (slap us on the wrist and say do it next time?)...

If all schools aren't reporting (like in baseball and softball, or even basketball) - why should we all pay the $75?

How about you make it manditory for everyone in your conference to report? Why not make it better rather than worse? Why not help solve the problem. The problem isn't DakStats or the 75 bucks, its the people not reporting. Get on them rather than the people trying to make it better.

We all report, by 10:30 each night for basketball, and within 90 minutes of all other games...but in TAS, not DakStats

In fact, the stats on our old website were as good as any D-I school...

But now, with DakStats and the problems with the WebSync, it has been a problem

Big Dawg,
The problem isn't a lack of reporting!
The problem is that we have mandatory reporting and then I get an email from each of my school SID's telling me that they couldn't sync.
And if they do, some other school thousands of miles away has screwed up the stats!

You can make people report all you want, but when 75% of the time they go on and get error messages all night, what are you supposed to do!
